Facilities & Equipment

The CooperLab is situated in the Bergeron Centre for Engineering Excellence (The Berg), built in 2015 and pictured above. The Berg is home to the Mechanical Engineering Department at the Lassonde School of Engineering, and houses advanced engineering facilities including a fully-equipped machine shop and a microfabrication shop. The CooperLab, pictured below, is uniquely situated on the top floor of the Berg, with indoor space and outdoor rooftop access to facilitate both controlled laboratory and outdoor “on-sun” experiments.

Experimental Facilities

The experimental facilities currently available in the CooperLab are listed below. Collaborations and external users are welcome. Please inquire (tcooper@yorku.ca) if you have any questions about the facilities.

Solar Facilities
  • Collimated Beam Solar Simulator (1 sun)
  • Large Area LED Solar Simulator (up to 2 suns)
  • 1.6 kW High Intensity Xenon Source
  • Outdoor Test Platform
Thermal Facilities
  • 1700 °C Tube Furnace with Vacuum and Steam capabilities
  • 3 kW Induction Furnace
Spectroscopy Facilities
  • Spectral Transmission and Reflection Spectroscopy capabilities from 220 nm to 40 μm across two instruments:
    • Bruker Vertex 70 FTIR Spectrometer with:
      • 400 nm to 40 μm wavelength range
      • Attenuated Total Reflectance (ATR)
      • Diffuse reflectance (DRIFTS) via Two-Detector Diffuse Gold Integrating Sphere
      • Diffuse reflectance via Coblentz Sphere
    • Shimadzu UV-2600 Spectrophotometer with:
      • 220 to 1400 nm wavelength range
      • Diffuse reflectance (DRIFTS) via Two-Detector Integrating Sphere
      • Diffuse reflectance via Coblentz Sphere
  • High-Temperature (up to 2000 °C) Emission Spectroscopy Setup (coming soon)
Optical Facilities
  • Large 20″ Radiometry Sphere/Calibrated Light Source
  • High-Temperature (1000 °C) Blackbody Source

Vacuum Facilities
  • 16″ High Vacuum (HV) Cube Chamber
